In the final lines of "Auguries of Innocence" BlakeĀ writes:
"We are led to Believe a Lie
When we see not Thro the Eye
Which was Born in a Night to perish in a Night
When the Soul Slept in Beams of Light
God Appears & God is Light
To those poor Souls who dwell in Night
But does a Human Form Display
To those who Dwell in Realms of day"Ā
Your Human Eye was born in a night: meaning your eye was made inĀ darkness, within your mother's womb. When you "die" your human eye will also perish in a night: that human eye will go dark, it's not what you'll be seeing out of any longer.
All the while, our Soul exists in Beams of Light -- you can get a sense for it by contemplating your Cosmological Spirit (where was the all the different kinds of light at the moment of your birth? What entries were they in?).
As Humans, should we ever find ourselves in aĀ Dark Night of the Soul, or contemplating the darkness, Blake tells us that this is when God will appear becauseĀ God is Light. When we spend our timeĀ only in Realms of Day, our inner eyes weaken,Ā and we are then led to believe a lie and a "human form" or a human limitation is "displayed" to us.
BlakeĀ refers to those who "dwell in Night" as "poor souls" -- I believe this is supposed to be taken ironically. By society's standardsĀ those who "dwell in Night" areĀ poor souls, though in truth they remain closer to God, while those who dwell only in Day, aren't called "poor", but they do remainĀ stuck in Human Form.Ā
The whole of nature reflects back to us, especially lately, the strengthening of our inner eyes & inner light. We can see with all these miracles that anĀ integration is happening in all of us of Day & Night, or that we're finally all beginning to see "The World in a Grain of Sand" or "Heaven in a Flower". |
